  ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਦਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਜੰਗੀ ਤੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਸੰਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਿਕਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਦਾ ਜੀਵੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਆਸ਼ੀਰਵਾਦ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਦੂਰਦਰਸ਼ੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹ ਦਲ ਸਦੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਮੁੱਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ, ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਥ ਦੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।   ਦਲ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆ ਤ ਸੱਤਰਹੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ, ਜਦੋਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਵਧੇ, ਤਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ  ਮੀਰੀ-ਪੀਰੀ  ਦਾ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਦਿੱਤਾ — ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਤੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਸੰਤੁਲਨ। ਇਸੇ ਅਧਾਰ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ  ਅਕਾਲ ਸੈਨਾ  ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜਿਸਨੇ ਅਗੇ ਚੱਲ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਪੰਥ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਿਆ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਫੌਜ ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਮੁੱਖ ਹਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡਿਆ ਗਿਆ — ਬੁੱਢਾ ਦਲ (ਵੱਡੀ ਫੌਜ) ਤਰੁਣਾ ਦਲ (ਜਵਾਨ ਫੌਜ) ਬੁੱਢਾ ਦਲ ਦੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਨੁਭਵੀ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਯੋਧੇ ਸਨ ਜੋ ਨੌਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਲੀਮ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਦੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਤੇ ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਸਨ।   ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਦਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ  ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ  ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ’ਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ...
