The Historic Journey of a Sikh Martial Tradition

Baba Budha Dal, the foremost and historic Nihang Sikh army, traces its origins to the time of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and was formally organized by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This esteemed organization was created to uphold Sikh principles, protect Sikh religious sites, and provide martial training to the community. The Dal emerged as a distinct identity, deeply rooted in the martial and spiritual traditions of the Khalsa.

Baba Binod Singh, a descendant of Guru Angad Dev Ji's lineage, was the first head (Jathedar) of Budha Dal, appointed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Nanded. He was entrusted with Nishan Sahib, Nagara (war drum), and weapons, establishing a strong foundation of leadership in the Panth. The Dal's name originates from Baba Budha Ji, a revered Sikh figure known for his devotion and service during the times of the Sikh Gurus.

Over centuries, Budha Dal has preserved Sikh values through the protection of Gurdwaras, safeguarding Sikh traditions, and maintaining the Khalsa martial spirit. The organization became instrumental during invasions, conflicts with Mughals and British forces, and safeguarding Punjab’s Sikh heritage.

The Budha Dal is part of the Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal, the supreme religious and martial body among Nihang Singhs. Their distinctive blue attire, adorned with weapons and iron bracelets, symbolizes fearlessness and spiritual dedication. The Dal follows a strict code of conduct, regular Nitnem (daily prayers), and practices martial arts.

The leadership of Budha Dal has passed through distinguished Jathedars like Baba Binod Singh, Nawab Kapur Singh, Baba Phula Singh, and continues today with Baba Balbir Singh Ji, the current Budha Dal head and leader of the Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal.

The Budha Dal also actively promotes education and social welfare, managing public schools and community services. Its members remain devoted to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Dasam Granth, and Sarbloh Granth, upholding the Khalsa Panth’s honor and sovereignty.
